  1. Whether your company is a global brand with millions of fans or a tiny startup with a handful of customers, one thing remains true: Great marketing starts with understanding and empathizing with your customer. It’s the best way to build trust. Gain their trust first, then you’ll earn the opportunity to explain how your product or service solves problems for them.

From our research we know that 63 percent of consumers think marketers are selling them things they don’t need. That tells me that we, as marketers, are breaking this cardinal rule of marketing. We aren't listening.

I recently spoke at the 2019 SaaStr Annual conference about how we need to lean into customer feedback more than we ever have before -- and how using surveys to listen to your customers can create rabid fans for your brand. I’ve translated some of that talk below to show how easy and effective it can be to use customer feedback to accelerate startup growth.

  2. In this rapidly changing digital world, a company website functions as a calling card and is often the primary channel for customer relations. As a digital marketeer, you are constantly coming up with new ways to satisfy your online customers. 4. Startup life can get pretty intense. Most of the time teams work in a zoomed-in mode, and it’s very easy to lose perspective and disconnect from the people you are actually building for. When real pains are replaced with your assumptions, product development can go astray. If you feel like you don’t know who’s on the other side of the screen anymore, schedule in a couple of days to talk to your users. Below I will share 5 ways in which user feedback helped us stay on track at different stages of building a startup.

  5. According to a CB Insights report, 42% of startups fail because there’s no market need for the product or service they offer. This is a distressing statistic for would-be entrepreneurs. An often overlooked or underappreciated first step to starting a new business is determining the market demand for the product or service. As a digital marketing expert, I see many first-time business owners get caught up in an interesting business idea but fail in engaging people through lack of demand. Demand can be created, but it takes time, extensive resources and some luck. Unless you have the capital of Apple or Microsoft, this isn’t a feasible strategy.
